Good Morning Emerson Eagles! Dream, Believe, Achieve!
Today is Monday, February 7, 2011

Upcoming Events:
During Saturday School over 40 students made up an absence, planted potatoes, and earned enough points in First in Math to move us up district-wide!

The computer lab in the library will now be open!!!  Ms. Betty will be there to help students and classes take AR quizzes, access math homework at your level on SuccessNet, and also earn stickers in First in Math.
The day after tomorrow, Wednesday, there will be a special assembly, during which we will make a big announcement.  The only clue that I can give at this point is that it has something to do with a special TICKET!

Today is the first day of our SKILL BLITZ!  During the next 10 weeks until CST testing, we will focus one one READING COMPREHENSION skill every week.  This week our skill is Story Structure.  If you see the story structure poster in your classroom, please point to it.  The three elements of Story Structure are: plot, setting and characters.  Think of a game (like the Superbowl), a book or a movie that you have watched and try to identify the plot (what happens), the characters (who is in the story), and the setting (the surroundings where it occurs).    Today use story structure to help improve your understanding of what you are reading.

What's more important, SPELLING WORDS or VOCABULARY WORDS?  Everyone, please discuss this question with a partner.
Spelling IS important, especially if you are learning word roots, origins and spelling patterns, but VOCABULARY will help you use the language of the discipline- science, history, mathematics, or language arts to discuss important topics accurately and in a mature and sophisticated way.  Pay more attention to vocabulary than spelling AND make sure that you use your vocabulary words as often as possible.

Lunch and Attendance:
For lunch, you have two choices, the Farm Fresh Salad Bar, or the hot lunch. Today the hot lunch is:

Turkey Corn Dogs
Oven Fries
Diced Pears

If you would like to have a hot lunch, please raise your hand. Teachers, please take a count and make a note on your online attendance form.

Rules:
Students may not enter the campus in the morning in the lower parking lot unless they are arriving by bus.  Additionally, students cannot go to the lower classroom hallway without permission or supervision.

Pledge:
Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance!

Superbowl or First in Math?

Hopefully you won't have to make the choice, but I hope that YOUR team emerges as a winner!  For Emerson to move ahead and PASS up the competition in First in Math, we'll need a game plan.  To start with we need to go on the OFFENSE and score as many points as possible.  So regardless of whether you are a Packers fan, a Steelers fan, a HALFTIME fan, or a fan of the superbowl COMMERCIALS, I hope that the kids will still have lots of time on the computer to make sure that the EMERSON EAGLES win!

Here are the STATS going into the big weekend:
Stickers Earned: 149,396
Average Stickers per Team: 4,819
Math Problems solved: 448,188
Worksheets Saved: 44,819
Teacher Hours Saved: 527

We know that we can easily reach 150,000 and move possibly into the 152,000 range tonight.  Tomorrow in Saturday School, we'll have our FIRST STRING-at least 45 students- all paying the 24 game for at about 3 hours each.  We may be able to reach 155,000 stickers by noon and at 165,000 by the end of the weekend.  That would be about a 10%  gain in one weekend!

Saturday at noon is kind of like HALFTIME.  I'll send out a COMMERCIAL on my blog to let you know how we are doing.  Hopefully we'll be halfway to achieving success!

By the time the SUPERBOWL begins, Emerson hopes to have scored 161,000 stickers.  Then we'll be at the TWO MINUTE WARNING.  There will be no time to waste, and IF YOUR TEAM WINS, your student should really pour it on and rack up as many points as possible.  All the fans of the LOSING TEAM may be too sad to play...

When bedtime comes on Sunday night, Emerson should have enough points to pass up at least two other schools in the SUPERBOWL WEEKEND of First in Math.  While you already have a favorite- the PACKERS or the STEELERS- whatever you do, make sure that EMERSON wins in FIM.

Let's go team Emerson!!!

Good Morning Emerson Eagles!
Dream, Believe, Achieve!
Today is Thursday, February 3, 2011

Question of the Day:
What's up?  That's a great question, but before you say "the sky," you had better think about how to answer this question correctly.  Remember that you have to answer in a complete sentence and you have to respond correctly to the question.  Here are a couple of possible responses:
There's not much going on except a lot of homework!
So much is going on, I don't know where to start.  What's up with you?  Pleas ask this question to at least 3 people
Writing:
I have received a few letters over the past few days from Emerson students.  One of the most memorable letters was from 3 students who asked why we don't get to go on more field trips.  If you really want something, it is worth writing a letter asking for it.

Upcoming Events:
Saturday School is this Saturday from 8 am until 12:20. The computer carts will be there with opportunities for First in Math. But also, we are going to have a garden work day on Saturday. Saturday School Students will get to go out to the garden to plant potatoes. If anyone would like to join together in our community garden on Saturday from 8 until 11 am, please come on out!

First In Math
Congratulations to Mr. Cortez' Class- Team of the Week!

Yesterday afternoon during HEARTS, I chalenged the students to try to increase our sticker count from 135,000 up to 140,000.  That was a huge goal, and eventhough we didn't make it, we almost made it.  Last night we reached 139,500!Remember, First in math is not going to be your priority in the classroom, but you may have the opportunity to play from time to time after you have completed your independent work.  It may not be as fun, but Pearson SuccessNet will assign math work that is just perfect for your level.

Rule Reminders:
No runing in the hallways.  Never throw any objects, like rocks or sand, at school.  Always go out of your way to be generous and kind.

Lunch and Attendance:
Before I tell you what's for lunch today, I want you to know about a special lunch offer for tomorrow- you can get both the HOT DOG and the SALAD BAR tomorrow- you won't have to chose.  That's tomorow, but for today you have two choices, the Farm Fresh Salad Bar, or the hot lunch. Today the hot lunch is:

Bean & Cheese Burrito, Salsa
Steamed Green Beans
Fresh Fruit
If you would like to have a hot lunch, please raise your hand. Teachers, please take a count and make a note on your online attendance form.

Pledge:
Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance!
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
